Q. I have a Smsung Ultra compact camcorder VPD453i which shoots using both MiniDV and Memory Stick Pro. With the prices of 4GB Memory STick below $75, I am tempted to use them instead of cassettes for shooting. Is there any difference in quality of the videos when using MiniDV and Memory Sticks ? Your reply will help me decide to invest in few 4GB/ 8GB memory sticks or stick to MiniDV cassettes. Thank you. |
A. Yes, you lose video quality from the memory stick. It is reduced image size and poor resolution. Memory Stick PRO format enables high-quality, longer-time recording of larger-capacity data.
One advantage with memory sticks is the easy access. with a tape you have to record all of the footage over to the PC, where as Memory stick, just drag and drop.

Q. My hdd camera has 30GB. I'm going on vacation and will need more storage. Will an external drive work? |
|
A. When your camcorder is full dump the footage onto the external drive or, to save space, transfer it to DVDs or mini DV tapes. If you wanted to record from the camcorder directly to the hard drive you would need a laptop with editing software or a program like DVRack. Firestore sells a hard drive based recorder. |
